Chukar and Pheasant Championships

Pheasant Ridge will be holding two Chukar Championships and two Pheasant Championships during the 2010-2011 season. The first Chukar Championship will be held on September 25th 2010 and the second will be held on December 4th 2010. The Pheasant Championships will be held on September 18th 2010 and November 20th 2010.These  events will prove to be both challenging as well as fun. Sign in begins at 8am and event will start at 8:30 am. Competitors must register at least on week before each event. When you register you will be given a time in which you are to be in the field. The sooner you register the more time slots you will have to choose from.

In a chukar/ pheasant challence a competitor and his dog sit in a blind while his birds are planted. Four chukar/ pheasant are planted. The competitor is then escorted into the field by a Judge and the hunt begins. The hunter has 20 minutes and eight shot shells to harvest the four chukar/ pheasant. Teams recieve 30 minutes, six chukar/ pheasant and 12 shells. The event is scored as below.

Awards 

The top three places in all the divisions will be awarded a trophy. Ten dollars per entry will be placed in a purse and will be divided as follows: 50% first 30% second and 20% third in all divisions. Awards will also be given for best overall in all divisions for competitors whom compete in three championships. If you compete in all four championships your lowest score will be dropped.

Divisions

Flushing Singles  Open to any flushing dog. One hunter/handler, four chukars/ pheasant and eight shells. Cost to compete is $80.00 for chukar and $110.00 for pheasant.

Flushing Team Open to any flushing dog and a team of two hunters. Six chukars/pheasant and twelve shells(six per gun). Cost to compete is $120.00 for chukar and $150.00 for pheasant.

Pointing Singles Open to any pointing dog. One hunter/handler, four chukars/ pheasant and eight shells. Cost to compete is $80.00 for chukar and $110.00 for pheasant

Pointing Team Open to any pointing dog and a team of two hunters. Six chukar/pheasant and twelve shells (six per gun).Cost to compete is $120.00 for chukar and $150 for pheasant.

Scoring

 20 points for each bagged chukar/ pheasant in hand

15 points for each "find" flushed or pointed

5 points each remaining loaded shell

10 points for each retrieve within one step of hunter

1 point for each full thirty seconds under the allocated qualifying time limit. Time stops when the last bird is in hunters hand and dog is on lead.

Tie scores will be broken first by retrieving points, second by remaining shell points and thirdly by lowest qualifying time.

Safety and sportsmanlike conduct is of our highest concern. Upland hunting has long been a "gentleman sport" so please conduct yourself as such. These events are for your dogs benefit so enjoy the dog work and have fun!

Rules

• 1. No running with firearm, grounds for disqualification.
• 2. No alcoholic beverages; no hunter/handler will be allowed to compete if they have consumed any alcohol.
• 3. No collar of any type allowed on a dog while competing.
• 4. No bitches in heat allowed on grounds.
• 5. All dogs must be kept on lead and away from qualifying grounds until thier turn to qualify. No spectators allowed near holding blinds. Spectators will be in designated areas only.
• 6. All guns must be unloaded and cased until ready to qualify. Dogs must be on lead and under control at all times. If a judge or marshal feels a dog is out of control it may be disqualified.
• 7. Qualifying times will be assigned in the order entries are recieved. Competitors must register at least a week before the event. For best pick of times register early. Any late entries will be filled in at discretion of Pheasant Ridge.
• 8. All hunters must register in the clubhouse at least 30 minutes prior to assigned run time. Disclaimers will also be signed at this time.
• 9. When birds are being planted in the field the next hunter(s) up are to be in holding blinds so bird planting is not scene by hunter(s). Any hunter(s) not in holding blind during bird planting will be disqualified. All birds shot will be carried by hunter(s) at all times while qualifiying. No birds may be dropped in field.
• 10. Judges will accompany all competitors into the field. Competitors must sign score sheet before leaving the field. Any disagreements must be addressed at this time. All decisions by Judges and Marshall are final!!
• 11. All birds must be shot in the air unless caught by the dog. This is the only way birds will be counted. Already dead birds can not be picked up by hunter and counted toward bag. Only birds of the species being hunted my be harvested and counted (pheasant only during pheasant comp. and same for chukar). In cases of dogs trapping a bird the bird will be counted and one shell will be will be forfeited. Pointing breeds trapping a bird will result in a five point penalty.
• 13. Qualifying time will end 1. maximum "bag points" have been awarded and dog is on lead 2. qualifying time has expired 3. hunter(s) have used all shells.
• 14. Pointer Rules  Pointing breed dogs cannot be "whoa" to a "find" A pointing dog must establish a point to be awarded "find" points."Whoa" can be used to stop creeping after the point has been established for three seconds. If the dog flushes of catches the bird before the hunter(s) has (have) a chance to flush the bird no "find" points will be given. There will be a five point penalty for each bird trapped or caught by a poining breed dog that the hunter(s) did not get a chance to flush or shoot.     
• 15. Retrieve points will be awarded when the dog retrieves a bird no more then one step from the hunter. Hunters may not move toward the dog or bird after bird is shot. If hunter moves before told to a judge he will get no points.
• 16. Judges will explain the boundries before the run begins. The boundries will be marked. No hunter is allowed to persue or shoot at game outside boundries. Hunters may shoot at game that flies out of bounds if the hunter is in bounds. A dog may retrieve game that falls out of bounds.
• 17. In the event a safety is called due to a safety issue such as a bird flushes toward the judge or gallery or the bird flies to low to offer a safe shot over the dog, the bird will be counted in full and one shell is forfeited. Safety must be called before first shot is fired and cannot be called after. If a hunter shoots after a Judge calls safety he may be disqualified.
• 18. No organizer or host club staff member, bird planter, or judges will be allowed to compete.
